Aurangabad, a well known city in the Marathwada region of Maharashtra, also known as the "land of saints", In adverse social situation, all these saints worked hard and taught people to have faith in god. The saints preaching show the positive change in the behavioral pattern of the society. A group of people who consider Shri Gajanan Maharaj as "guru" were fully charged by the ideals of maharaj and in 1976 formed a reception committee under the Presidentship of Prof. Shridhar P.Wakte. The committee got the chance till 1985 to welcome and make arrangements for the “Shri Palkhi” and around 800-1000 bhaktas. During this period the social and cultural changes began at a Aurangabad, many devotees came forward and joined hands with Prof. Shridhar Wakte, who by this time has resolved to erect one grand temple of Shri Gajanan Maharaj in this land of saints.

To give the legal identity to this divine work, a trust was registered namely "Shri Gajanan Maharaj (Shegaon) Mandir Vishvasta Mandal, Aurangabad" with the charity commissioner, Aurangabad. It was registered on 31st January 1981 with its registration no. E-270/Aurangabad. Inaugural function was held on 13th February 1981, Justice Shri Krishna Iyer, The Retd. Judge of Supreme Court of India, New Delhi attended as  Chief Guest and inaugurated this trust officially. He delivered the speech on  "The role of saints in character development", Prof. I.V.K.Sharstri, Principal, M.P.Law College presided over the function.

Shri Sarang Gruha Nirman society donated 10,000 Sq.ft land for the erection of the temple and to fulfill other objectives of the trust. Foundation stone of Mandir was laid by Haribhakta Parayan Shri Shivshankar Patil saheb, the president of Shri Gajanan Maharaj Mandir,Shegaon on 20th February 1984. Today, the trust holds a huge erected temple of Shri Gajanan Maharaj at Aurangabad, apart for one multi-facility building in front of Mandir, namely - Shri Gajanan Maharaj Bhavan.
